Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art through her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art could serve to engage people. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father recalled watching the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there were later the inspiration to create a documentary about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American studies. While she was studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing to the broadcast media. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to observe the house of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career as a publicist. DuVernay was hired right from college to be the junior publicist for the studio that was small. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The company also launched a variety of lifestyle networks and promotions like her own Urban Beauty Collective.
